Benefits Of All Season & Winter Tires

Benefits Of All-Season & Winter Tires

This comparison shows you the advantages of both All-Season & Winter tires

It’s crucial to understand the differences between All Season and Winter tires so that you can make the right decision when it comes to purchasing a set.

Benefits of All-Season Tires

Better Performance

Performance is key to getting you from A to B as quickly and safely as possible. Lighter tires will allow your vehicle to fully display its capabilities on the road.

Fuel Economy

With rising gas prices, it is always a good idea to save on fuel. It’s therefore not a good idea to use winter tires during the summer.

Tires that are not all-season can cause a dramatic increase in fuel consumption. This is why many people prefer to use all-season tires even when there isn’t snow.

Suitable For Different Road Conditions

All-season tires are equally good on both wet and dry roads. Because they are durable and can perform in all conditions, this makes them more versatile.

Winter Tires: Benefits

Great Grip On Snow & Ice

The main advantage lies in the grip you have on snow and ice. Even at a moderate speed, you won’t slip even though you are driving.

Deep Tread Depth

It matters how deep you get your tread, including patterns and sharp edges. It is possible to make sharp turns without worrying about how the tread will hold onto the road.

Won’t Harden During The Cold

Rubber can lock up when the temperature drops. If the temperature drops below a certain point, it can harden resulting in a vehicle sliding when attempting to brake.

Winter tires are therefore useful in cold weather as the compound of the tire does not harden in cold conditions.

Final Thoughts on All-Season Tires vs. Winter Tires

These are the things to consider when choosing the right tire for you.

Every situation is different, but premium winter tires are better for areas with a lot of snow and ice. You can drive comfortably and safely with the extra grip.

All-season tires are a good option if you live in an area with a mild winter. It will save you more fuel and optimize your driving performance.

TrilliTires offers a wide range of brand-name tires

Tire Rotation Vs Wheel Alignment

Tire Rotation vs Wheel Alignment

Safety is an essential part of safe driving. You might feel your vehicle is moving around a lot, especially after hitting a large pothole. Our mechanics will ask you if you would like a wheel alignment or a tire rotation when you visit us for tire service. If you don’t know the car maintenance language, you may end up confused. You can make it easier and order the right tire service. Below, you will find information about the differences between wheel alignment and tire rotation.

What is Tire Rotation?

Tire rotation is recommended for vehicles that seem to move from one side to the other when you drive. Tire rotation, also known as wheel or tire balancing, involves moving tires from one side to the other to ensure even wear.

Because they are the first point of contact with the road surface, your vehicle’s tires will wear over time. Due to friction levels, tires can experience uneven wear. For example, rear-wheel drive vehicles tend to have less wear on their front tires than they do on their rear tires. Inequal weight distribution can lead to uneven tire wear.

To ensure that tires are wearing evenly, it is important to rotate them every now and again.

What is Wheel Alignment?

A wheel alignment might be necessary if your vehicle is constantly drifting to one side when you drive straight. The process of aligning the front tires on your car to make sure they match the steering and tires at the rear is called wheel alignment. A large pothole in your car’s road can cause wheel alignment problems. Unaligned wheels can cause uneven tire wear and tire movement, as well as a decrease in vehicle performance and steering ability.

After detecting the problem, wheel alignments should be performed as soon as possible.

To Wrap It Up

You can reduce tire wear and improve fuel efficiency by rotating your tires. However, it is important to fix unaligned wheels immediately after discovering the problem. This can cause serious damage to your vehicle.

Absolute Car Care will perform comprehensive tire safety checks to ensure your vehicle is safe. This includes wheel alignment and wheel rotation. We will inspect your vehicle using the HawkEye Elite alignment machine.

Jump Starting A Car Battery 101

Jump Starting A Car Battery 101

Jump-starting your car for the first time was a right of passage for some. Jump-starting your first car can be daunting for those who haven’t had to deal with a dead battery before. Although it is quite simple, it is important to be careful when working with your engine.

You may have a dead car battery due to accidentally leaving your headlights on. Or you need to troubleshoot electrical system problems like your engine not starting. Knowing how to jumpstart a vehicle is essential for car owners. Let’s jump right in.

How to jump-start your car

You will first need jumper cables and a battery to boost the vehicle (either in another car or a standalone battery). Jump-starting your vehicle with a partner is advisable.

Here are some things to keep an eye on

Jump-starting your car safely is as simple as connecting your cables correctly from the battery to the booster car. Also, ensure that your jumper cables do not touch any metal parts or other metal parts of your vehicle.

Step-by-Step Guide to Jump-Starting Your Car

  1. The jumper vehicle should be pulled next to the dead battery. If you are using separate batteries to jump, ensure your cables can reach both. Turn off both engines by opening the hoods.
  2. Move over to the dead battery. Connect one of the red (positive), ends of your jumper cable to the positive terminal.

While you are not using your negative terminal you must ensure that you have uncharged ground available while setting up. This means placing the negative end of your jumper cables on a plastic (non-metal/non-conducting) part of your engine for the time being. If you’re doing this with a partner you can ask them to hold the negative end for you while you connect everything else.

  1. Connect the red (positive) end of the cables to the positive terminals of the live battery.
  2. Grab the black (or negative) end of your jumper cable and connect it to the live side. It should be connected to the negative end of the battery.
  3. Return to the terminal of your dead battery, and stop. Many people feel tempted to connect the negative end of their jumper cables to your dead battery’s negative post. This is a mistake. Connecting the negative end of your jumper cables directly to your dead battery can cause a spark that could ignite in a gaseous environment such as your vehicle’s engine.

Instead, look for a ground to connect to. In this instance, an unpainted, non-moving metal surface underneath your car’s hood. You may find a ground spot for jumping your car on some newer cars. Check your owner’s manual to confirm. This could be a bolt on an engine block or on the strut tower. Avoid using ground near fuel sources, such as grounds near your fuel pressure regulator.

  1. Before you jump the battery, make sure to check your cables. To avoid your cables getting caught in moving parts of the engine, ensure that they are not touching cooling fans or serpentine belts.
  2. Start the engine with a good battery. Let it run for at most two minutes. After the engine has been running for some time, turn off the ignition and start your dead vehicle.

If your dead battery doesn’t start at this point, wait 2-3 minutes before giving it another chance. If your engine does not start immediately or you have trouble starting it, you might be experiencing a solenoid or an electrical problem. In this event, you should contact your mechanic.

  1. After your dead battery is fully charged, you can disconnect the jumper cables in reverse. The negative ground should be disconnected first. You should make sure that the ends don’t touch.

You can work with a partner to remove the positive cable from an old battery port. They will then hold the cable while you unplug the battery.

If you’re working alone, I suggest that you remove the negative jumper from your dead battery. This will ensure that you have only the positive to negative connection left, which can prevent any sparks or frightening moments. Now you can safely remove the positive cables from your battery posts and replace them with the caps.

Nevertheless, it is far from done. After your engine starts, ensure you don’t turn it off for more than 15 minutes. You should have enough time to charge your battery. If you continue to experience the same problem when you try to start your car the next time, it could be a sign of a more significant issue such as a failing alternator, or battery.

How To Prevent Your Tires From Getting Cracks

How To Prevent Your Tires From Getting Cracks

Tires are subject to weather fluctuations, including temperature changes from summer to winter, as well as brake dust and chemicals. Although tires are protected by anti-aging chemicals in the rubber, they can be damaged by these elements. Rubber’s elasticity can lose and cause cracking. Normal tires will last between five and seven years. However, as they age, they begin to wear out. This can lead to dangerous cracks.

WHAT ARE THE CRACKS IN TIRES?

Weather checking, weather cracking, and ozone-craking are all terms used to describe small cracks in tires. They usually develop on the sidewalls or in the base of the tread grooves. These cracks are signs that the rubber in tires is beginning to wear. Cracks usually develop on the sidewall and then spread to the tire’s outer surface beneath the tread. As rubber flexibility decreases, cracks become larger and more dangerous. They don’t always mean that the tire should be replaced. However, as your tires grow in size, depth, and number, it may be necessary to replace them.

SHOULD I BE CONCERNED?

They can become more difficult to repair as they grow. These cracks can quickly turn into larger cracks or other problems that could lead to a tire burst. The tire’s structural integrity may be compromised if cracking is visible between the treads. It is important to have an experienced mechanic examine the tire. A tire with cracks that is less than a year old could be an indication of a manufacturing defect and should be replaced immediately.

HOW TO PREVENT AGING & CRACKED TIRES

You can prevent your tires from cracking and aging by keeping them away from the elements.

  • Park your car in a garage that is not directly exposed to sunlight if you can.
  • After driving, clean the tires of snow and mud.
  • To reduce tire strain, keep the tires inflated.
  • Do not allow your tires to sit in water.
  • Your vehicle shouldn’t be left in one spot for too long. Even if your vehicle isn’t used often, you should take it out for a drive every few weeks to get the tires moving.

WHAT TO DO IF YOUR TIRES ARE AGING OR CRACKED?

You should take your tire to your local Tire Shop for an inspection if you see signs of aging or cracking. Cracked tires may be repaired but it might not fix the problem. For your safety and that of other drivers, it is best to replace worn-out tires in order to prevent accidents from happening.

Tire Shopping For Drivers 101

Tire Shopping For Drivers 101

It is a big decision to choose the right tires for your vehicle. To last a long period of time, tires must be durable and fit your vehicle. Before buying tires, there are some things that every driver should be aware of:

TIRE SIZE

For recommended tire sizes, first, consult the owner’s manual. These measurements should look like this: P215/60R16/94T. The first section is about the tire’s dimensions, including width and diameter. The load index is the last section, while the letters indicate the speed rating. Follow the recommended measurements of your vehicle’s manufacturer when tire shopping.

LOAD INDEX

The load index is an important factor when choosing the right tires. This is a number between two and three digits that indicates how heavy the tire can carry. Multiply the number by 4 to get the full load index. These numbers usually range between 60 (550 lb. From 60 (550 lb.) to 139 (5.357 lb.). Tires with a lower load index should be avoided. A local mechanic will be able to help you choose the right tire load index for your vehicle.

SPEED RATE

The speed rating is a number that indicates how fast the tire can heat dissipate heat. The rubber will wear faster if it is hotter than normal. T and H are the most popular rates. Tire failure or damage can result from exceeding this maximum rate.

TIRE TYPE

There are several common types of tires that have different speed ratings. The following types of tires can be used to find the right size for your vehicle with the assistance of a technician:

  • All-Season: These are usually available in S and T-speed ratings. They are well-known for their all-weather grip, mileage, and durability. These tires are popular for SUVs and small- and medium-sized cars.
  • Winter/Snow: Anyone who lives in areas that experience snow and wintery conditions should purchase snow tires. This will increase safety, braking, and steering ability on slippery roads. Winter/snow tires should only be purchased in sets of 4. This will ensure optimal handling and braking.
  • Summer Tires: Mostly used by performance vehicles. These tires offer a much more powerful performance during the warm season and can handle high speeds. They usually offer less mileage in comparison to All-Season and Winter tires.
  • Ultra-High-Performance Tires (UHP): UHP tires are available as all-season or summer All-season UHP tires are more efficient in snowy and icy conditions than summer tires. Summer UHP tires are better in rainy conditions. They are usually rated at speeds of Z, W, or Y.

TIRE BRAND

Stick with the same brand that came with your vehicle (if you like) when tire shopping. The tires that came with your car directly from the manufacturer are likely to fit your vehicle. You can find the original tires even if they have been worn or replaced. You can continue using the same brand if you haven’t had any problems with your tires.

LOCAL ENVIRONMENTAL EFFECTS

When choosing a tire type, it is important to consider the weather patterns and climate of your region. If you live in the northern part of Canada, where there is a lot of snowfall, and are subject to icy conditions, purchasing winter tires might be a good investment, especially in the coldest months. Winter tires might not be necessary for someone living in Texas, USA. Due to their compound, they are less capable to withstand snowfall as they start to harden when temperatures drop below 10 degrees Celcius.

WARRANTY

One of two warranties that a tire manufacturer might offer is a defect protection warranty and one that covers tread wear. Numerous tire manufacturers offer both a tread warranty and a defect protection warranty. Warranty coverage is based on how many kilometers the tires have traveled. Before you purchase your set, make sure to check the warranty and talk with your mechanic.

3 Main Reasons Not To Mix Tires

3 Main Reasons Not To Mix Tires

For optimal safety and performance, it is strongly recommended that the same tires be used on all four wheels. The front and rear tires should have the same size, brand, tread pattern, load index, speed rating, and tread pattern. Tire sizes and constructions that are not compatible can pose a danger. When choosing new tires for your vehicle, truck, or SUV, our tire experts recommend that you follow the manufacturer’s instructions for proper size, load index, as well as other specifications.

Mixing tires is when you use a tire that has a different characteristic than the one you have. Industry experts recommend that all four tires be replaced at once, or at least two rear-facing tires. Here are some examples of mixed tires:

  • Different seasons tire sizes (e.g. summer and winter)
  • Non-run-flat tires can be used in place of run-flat tires
  • Different sizes or tread patterns for tires
  • Different tire brands

Why you shouldn’t mix tires on your vehicle

Uneven tread wear –Routine wheel rotations and alignments will ensure uniform tire wear. Tires that are mixed will result in uneven weight distribution and tires that wear faster.

Unstable Handling –Mixed tires may make driving difficult. Your tires are engineered with handling and traction properties. Vehicle handling and braking problems can be caused by mixing tires of different sizes, tread patterns, and designs. Poor handling can lead to unstable driving conditions that increase the risk of accidents.

Limited Performance –Mixed tires won’t work well together for safe and smooth driving. This can limit your vehicle’s acceleration, maximum speed, and load capability, which could cause it to not achieve its optimal driving performance.

Proper maintenance can extend the life of car tires from 5 to 10 years. You might need to replace your tires sooner than you expected if they are mixed. The same tires will offer traction, grip, safety, and overall safety. Every vehicle’s comfort level and handling abilities are affected by the tires. It’s best to use identical tires in all aspects. We are always available to help you decide what type of tires would best suit your vehicle, whether it is a car, truck, or SUV. Get in touch with our tire experts today!

Why Do Tires Flatten In Cold Weather?

Why Do We Get Flat Tires In Cold Weather?

Your vehicle’s safety and functionality are directly affected by the condition of your tires. Proper tire maintenance is essential to prevent flats, improve road safety, and increase gas mileage. Tires will require routine inspection and maintenance during the winter months. For every 18 degrees F drop in temperature, tire pressure will drop by about 1 PSI. The TPMS (tire pressure monitoring system) monitors your tire pressure and allows you to check it regularly. The TPMS light will turn on if one or more tires are below the recommended pressure. The recommended tire pressure for your vehicle should be the same as the one in the owner’s guide.

It is important to monitor your tire pressure to avoid a cold-weather flat. Drivers may notice a low-pressure warning light or observe that their tires need to be inflated when it is cold. This is normal for cold weather. Want to know more? Continue reading to learn more about why cold weather tires can go flat.

How cold weather affects tire pressure

Your tires can be damaged by cold weather. Low temperatures can cause the rubber to shrink, which could lead to gaps between the rubber and rim. This will cause air to slowly leak. Rubber tires can become harder and brittle due to the cold. Summer tires can crack and lose grip on the roads if they are used during winter. Winter is a crucial time to make sure you have the correct tires.

In cold weather, air pressure drops, tire flattens

When it’s cold, air contracts. Air molecules that move slower in cold weather don’t use as much space within the tire and don’t move as fast. Air pressure drops if air molecules move slower. Also, less space means that smaller molecules push against the tire walls which causes a decrease in tire pressure. After a few miles, the tires will warm up and your tire pressure light will go off. This is because the molecules will expand again. You should still ensure that your tires have a little extra air.

Do not wait for the warning light to go on about your tire pressure. You should check the tire pressure every month. Proper tire pressure will increase the life of your tires. However, improper tire pressure can lead to rapid or irregular wear that could cause serious internal damage. For safe and efficient driving, make sure you keep your tires properly inflated all year.

Optimizing For Corners – An Overview On Camber Adjustment

Optimizing For Corners - An Overview On Camber Adjustment

Your vehicle’s camber is the measurement in degrees of your tire’s center-line in relation to the road’s surface. This affects how you handle steering when your car possesses a suspension design. Premium vehicles, such as sports cars that have particular suspension models, are designed for efficiency in speed and handling capabilities.

These types of vehicles have low frames that make them unreliable in uneven terrain. On the other hand, this makes them incredibly fast and effective on even surfaces, such as asphalt and concrete. Although you may not be driving an expensive sports car or a luxury vehicle that has this model, it’s still vital for your safety to maintain a balance on your camber’s alignment.

Understanding camber’s effects on handling

Your vehicle’s negative camber is a reflection on how the top of your tire tucks inwards when making turns. Depending on your car’s frame, negative cambers can improve your handling on the road. A car that does not have negative cambers will run the risk of having a compromised overall grip.

Opposite to a negative camber’s value, a positive degree reflects how the top of your tire turns outwards. As such, high positive camber value can lead to complications in preventing you from making effective turns.

WATCH THE VIDEO BELOW TO LEARN MORE ABOUT CAMBER

Balancing positive and negative camber values

Although the presence of negative camber allows you to have a better grip on the road, it can also put too much stress on your inner tires. The added pressure is transferred to the tires’ inner portion, which will cause an imbalance on your tires over time.

If you opt to balance your camber, you will also need to deal with the tire alignment of your other wheels. This is because having unbalanced arrangements will lead to an imbalanced load on your ball joints and bearings. The key to making sure that your vehicle’s handling remains consistent is by striking a proper balance on positive and negative camber on your tires.

positive and negative camber

Seeing the option for zero camber

Certain European models of cars are made with speed and turning in mind, which is why they have superior cornering capabilities. If you’re using a different model, your car would need to realign to a high enough negative camber value to allow sharp hairpin corner turns. However, you need to be careful about adjusting your values, which makes it difficult to handle on country highways.

When going through straight movements, a tire that’s extended too much can affect how well you can handle hard stops. There’s also the option to go for zero camber on all your tires which will reduce your car’s performance significantly when it comes to maneuvering through corners. Yet, doing so prolongs your tire’s lifespan by distributing a balanced load on all your tires.

Reviewing your own driving style

Did you know that your driving style will play a huge role in how much or how little you should adjust your camber? If you’re a casual driver who turns corners at slow speeds, adjusting your comber to negative values may give you more problems than you bargained for. However, if you’re an adventure seeker who likes to take your car to its limits in taking fast and sharp turns, the proper balancing of the camber may be necessary to improve your car’s maneuverability.

Adjusting your camber requires precise measuring tools and the proper testing equipment. If you attempt to realign your tires by yourself, you may run the risk of creating more problems for the car’s handling. Make sure that you contact a garage that can perform a proper drive test to make the right adjustments to your car’s camber values.

Behind the Wheel – What to Expect When Purchasing New Tires For Your Car

Behind the Wheel - What to Expect When Purchasing New Tires For Your Car

Car maintenance is a must if you want to keep your vehicle in mint condition for the smoothest ride possible. One of the parts that need the most attention is your tires, especially since it experiences the most abuse on a daily basis. Being the hardest working part in your vehicle, it’s no surprise to see it weather-beaten at the end of the road sooner or later.

Once you notice signs of repairable wear-and-tear, it’s time to switch gears and invest in a new set of tires. However, buying the right tires isn’t a straightforward process as it seems. With multiple options in the market, finding the best one may feel overwhelming.

Watch Consumer Report Tire Buying Guide

With that in mind, the list below explores factors you need to consider when shopping for a set:

Tip #1: Consider the Right Tire Size

One of the most important factors you need to take into account is the tire size, which can impact the load rating in more ways than one. The rating can make or mar your experience as it ensures that your rubber of choice can handle the weight of your vehicle in its full pressure.

With that in mind, it’s best to think about the best tire size that will suit the maximum load pressure set for your vehicle. When looking for the load rating, you may notice them expressed in pounds per square inch (psi).

load index and speed rating meaning

Tip #2: Consider the Tire Capability

The right size means it can handle the load of your vehicle, but that doesn’t mean it can bring you the most benefit when out on the open road. With that in mind, you also need to look into the tire capability, which describes its longevity, performance, handling depending on the changing seasons.

Keep in mind that not all tires are built to handle the climate you drive in, so there are specialty tires that are designed to perform the best during certain times of the year. This includes the following:

  • All-Season – As the moniker suggests, all-season tires are engineered to suit vehicles that can deliver excellent fuel efficiency and smooth handling all-year-round. However, it’s not built to withstand inclement weather and is vulnerable to roads with sleet.
  • Winter – Once the highway is covered in a winter wonderland, it’s time to swap your tires for a specially-made rubber designed to handle low temperatures with stride.

Tip #3: Consider the Tire Longevity

Replacing your old tires can be an expensive and time-consuming process, which is why it’s crucial to choose tires that are built to last for the long haul. The mileage will have a significant impact on your tire’s tread-wear, so be sure to opt for tires with high ratings to ensure that you can go the distance without tiring out your tire’s lifespan.

The Bottom Line: The Quality Of Your Rubbers Will Get You Far in Your Journey

High-performing tires are crucial for safe driving, which is why you should consider the tips above to ensure you choose the best tires for you.

Road Knowledge – Choosing The Right Tires For The Season

Road Knowledge - Choosing The Right Tires For The Season

For other countries that are blessed with less harsh seasonal circumstances, this is a topic that may not be of much help or interest.  For us Canadians, we experience the worst kinds of winters known to man, so much so that our definitions of hot and cold weather are extreme in differences compared to others. With the possibilities of blizzards and heavy snowfall, car owners know the hassle of switching out their usual habits as the snow rolls in. Summer tires are not safe to be driving on iced-up roads and during snowfall. This is what gets people to go for a set of all-season tires to avoid the need to keep switching out all year round.

You are probably wondering about the scoop on each tire type, and whether it would be a good fit for your car. As unfortunate as we Canadians are with extreme weather conditions all year round, we hope this guide will help you decide on a set of tires for your next visit to a tire shop:

Some Information On Summer Tires

Summer tires are engineered specifically to deliver the best performance for your car during summers where it is warmer and more forgiving. You may be thinking about what summer tires actually provide over other types, because yes, it is true that the goal of tires is to keep your car running, and safely on the road.

This version of the tire is uniquely focused on ideal performance in only warm conditions in both dry and wet roads. Without needing to focus on seasonal differences such as icy roads and cold roads that have less traction, manufacturers can focus on getting the best performance characteristics for strictly summer-like conditions.

The issue here is that these tires are not good for use when temperatures drop below zero. Because they are optimized for gripping warm asphalt and roads, a frozen road has less friction with the tires, which means the grip on summer versions will is significantly reduced. You will not be able to drive, and if you are able to gain speed, control will be limited.

The Rundown On All-Season Tires

Although all-season variants of the tire lack traction in warm weather, they make up for this in their performance diversity. While you can’t use these tires to hit the track if you are a car racing enthusiast, these can be used in both high temperature and sub-freezing conditions without needing to be swapped out.

These can be used in light snow conditions but will be rendered quite useless during blizzards. If you live in a Canadian town with heavy snowfall and imminent blizzard conditions, you may have no choice but to invest in multiple sets of tires for your safety and mobility.

Making The Choice

Consider what your individual driving conditions are, as you may not always have the same lifestyle when it comes to cars as another person you know.

If you take short trips around your city during winter times, all-season tires can fit your car perfectly and still keep you safe all year round. If you constantly take trips out of town, consider driving on a set of summer tires for the summer, and a pair of winter tires for freezing conditions, as highways are always high speed.

Remember that climates in southern areas of Canada differ from northern regions, so always consider a good set of tires depending on where you live.

Watch Summer vs Winter vs All Season – Fully Explained

Tire choices are supposed to be reflective of driving style and purpose. Always remember that tires operate using friction between rubber and the road to keep cars safely running at higher speeds. Winter cuts out the friction and heat energy that summers have with tires, so depending on how harsh the seasons are, you may need a separate set of tires to keep safe.
